Netherlands : PhD Position: Language in Mind and Society

As a PhD candidate you will write a dissertation on a topic related to the Nijmegen Humanities research theme ‘Language in Mind and Society’. Descriptions of the theme can be found at
Depending on your supervisor’s institutional affiliation, you will be based either at the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies. You are expected to teach and participate in the research group that is relevant to your project.
Work environment
The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies together constitute the organizational basis for the humanities at Radboud University Nijmegen. The Faculty of Arts offers courses and conducts research in the areas of language and culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and business communication. The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies focuses on philosophy, theology and religious studies.
Your research will be embedded in one of the faculties’ three research institutes. Your proposal should therefore also relate to one of the institutes’ research programmes. The institutes and their programmes are described
What we expect from you
You should have a Research Master’s degree (or expect to complete the degree before September 2012) or similar qualifications in one of the disciplines related to your research proposal. You are result-oriented and have excellent writing skills. Demonstrable research experience in the field of your proposal will be considered an advantage.
What we have to offer
We offer you:
- employment: 0,8 - 1,0 fte;
- in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
- the gross starting salary amounts to €2,042 per month based on full-time employment, and will increase to €2,612 per month in the fourth year, based on a 38-hour working week;
- the total duration of the contract is 4 years. You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years;
- you will be classified as a PhD student (promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
