Germany: 2 Ph.D. Scholarships in Transformations in the Arab world

Two Ph.D. Scholarships

The German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik – SWP) is initiating a collaborative, policy-oriented research project designed to study the dynamics and directions of the current transformations in the Arab World under the headline:

»Elite change and new social mobilization in the Arab world«


SWP is calling for applications for two Ph.D. Scholarships that will be awarded to graduate students from the region who wish to participate in this project and who are working on a Ph.D. thesis related to a subject of relevance to the project. These scholarships will cover a period of 18 months starting in July 2012 through December 2013.

You will:
  • be part of an international research team based at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin;
  • have the opportunity to conduct field research;
  • get a hands-on introduction to the practice of think-tank work;
  • participate in the cooperative development of a conceptual model for an understanding of transformations in the Arab world;
  • discuss policy-oriented research results in different contexts and have the opportunity to participate in scientific conferences.
Your tasks:
  • to contribute a case study (for details refer to the concept paper on the project’s webpage) on Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, or Yemen. Applicants are explicitly encouraged to work on countries other than their country of origin/residence;
  • to contribute a short policy-oriented paper on a specific question relevant to the project;
  • to take part in regular meetings of the fellow forum to discuss research results, methodological questions and develop a conceptual model;
  • to take part in other activities of the project.
Eligibility:
  • Citizenship or former citizenship of a member state of the Arab League;
  • Master or equivalent degree in the social sciences;
  • Pursuit of a Ph.D. thesis related to the subject of the project;
  • Substantial periods of residence in the Arab region;
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and English. Knowledge of French and/or German is an asset.
Please note that SWP is not a university and therefore not in a position to award academic degrees. Applicants are expected to be registered in an academic program or institution authorized to award a Ph.D degree, or to register with such an institution upon receiving the scholarship.

Benefits:
Successful applicants will receive a scholarship of € 1,700 per month, as well as support for relocation to Berlin and for field research expenses.

Applicants should submit a CV, proof of academic and professional achievements and a letter of recommendation from their academic advisor, as well as a project description of between 2,000 and 2,500 words detailing the country they will work on, the research question, methodology used, preliminary work of relevance and a research schedule.

PhD Research Fellow in Technology with specialization in ICT

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow in Information and Communication Technology for a period of three years, at the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Science. The position is located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.
The Department of ICT offers bachelor level programmes in Computer Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering Multimedia Technology and Design, as well as a master programme in ICT and a PhD programme in Technology, with ICT as a specialization area.
The department has 3 large and active research groups in Information and Communication Technology including 7 Professors and 10 Associate Professors. In addition, there are about 20 Research Fellows on the PhD programme in ICT. Other members of the research group in ICT include a Professor II and an Associate Professor II.
The Department of ICT pursues a variety of research interests, focusing especially on ICT and crisis management, eLearning and eHealth. The department has successfully led a number of large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the EU research programme FP7.
This open position is associated with a newly established research centre, Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM), targeting at developing novel solutions for peer-to-peer communications in crisis situations. Potential research topics for this PhD project include:
  • Traffic modeling and network dependability analysis of ad hoc networks in crisis situations
  • Medium access control mechanisms in spectrum-agile and environment-aware multi-hop cooperative and cognitive radio networks
  • Performance analysis and evaluation of multi-hop wireless networks for mission-critical applications
The successful applicant must have qualifications in all the following fields:
  • Solid background in mathematics and performance evaluation of communication systems using Markov modelling
  • In-depth knowledge on cognitive radio networks (CRNs) especially channel aggregation techniques in multi-channel CRNs
  • Documented research experience by published or submitted papers
  • Excellent programming skills in MATLAB and NS2
The PhD Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD Programme in Technology, with ICT as specialization within three months of appointment. Applicants who already hold a Ph.D degree will normally not be considered for the position.
The following admission requirements apply to the PhD programme:
  • The average grade for courses included in the bachelor's degree (or equivalent) must be C (or equivalent) or higher;
  • The average grade for courses included in the master's degree (or equivalent) must be B (or equivalent) or higher;
  • The master's thesis (or equivalent) must have a grade B (or equivalent) or higher when the candidate is admitted to the PhD program.
A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required. Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 80 on the Internet based Test (iBT);
  • IELTS – International English Language Testing System, with a result of at least 6.0.

The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. In the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good collaborative skills will also be emphasised.
Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before appointment.

  2. In addition, send to the Bridging Project Clearinghouse a 6-10-page research paper on one of the following topics: (The paper’s conclusions should rely on both primary and secondary sources, in print as well as online.)

    • The financial and economic turmoil that began in 2008 has affected countries all over the globe. How has the crisis impacted the Japanese economy? What does the upheaval say about Japan's economic strengths, its weaknesses, and the policy prescriptions Japan needs for future prosperity?
    • The "triple blow" that was dealt to Japan by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region and the subsequent and ongoing nuclear crisis in Fukushima have had economic as well as human impacts that may linger for some time. How could Japan best turn this crisis into an opportunity for the future of the country?
    • How are geopolitical developments in China and Asia affecting the Japanese economy and its capital markets? What are the costs and benefits of a more active or a more passive stance on contributions by Japan to regional and global issues?
    • What will be the impact of Japan’s declining population on its domestic economy and status as a global economic power?

The World Bank eLibrary is the World Banks subscription-based collection of nearly 6,000 books, reports, journals, and working papers including:

Why dont I see the pdf symbol for some documents?

If you are not a subscriber, you are permitted to search, view, and download all free publications within eLibrary. However, paid content is only available by subscription, so the pdfs will not appear for those publications. Non-subscribers may, however, purchase and download any premium content with perpetual access rights.
