Denmark : Joint vacant PhD scholarships


The University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Law, and the University of Iceland, Faculty of Law, announce a number of joint vacant PhD scholarships available from September 2012. 

Scholarships:
 
The University of Copenhagen and The University of Iceland have established a Joint PhD Programme in line with Danish and Icelandic requirements leading to a Joint PhD Degree.

Candidates will be employed by and are expected to conduct study at The University of Copenhagen for a 2 year period and by The University of Iceland for a 1 year period. This arrangement may change in any individual case by a joint agreement between the universities and the applicant.

Candidates will be enrolled as PhD students and employees at the Universities during the three year course of their tenure.

All research projects within the discipline of Legal Science will be considered, however, priority will be given to research projects in EU and international law. The research project must be conducted in English.

The Joint PhD Programme 
The purpose of the Joint PhD Programme is to prepare candidates for a continuing career in legal research and teaching and to educate highly qualified individuals prepared to take on responsibilities in both the public and private sectors.

As a part of the Programme candidates will be required to conduct research at both Universities and become member of the tenured staff.

The Joint Degree assures research qualifications at an international level and is approved by both Denmark and Iceland.
Qualifications

  • Applicants must have an educational background that corresponds to the Danish or Icelandic Master´s Degree in Law (Second cycle 120 ECTS Master´s) or equivalent qualifications. 
  • Applicants who are expecting to graduate this term and awaiting the evaluation of their dissertation may apply.
  • Applicants must as far as possible document an aptitude for scientific work, for instance through a high assessment of their dissertations and must also be able to undertake the highly demanding task of independently writing a PhD thesis.
  • Applicants must be willing to live for a two year period in Denmark and for a one year period in Iceland.

During the Joint PhD Programme candidates are required to:

  • Participate in the research environments at the University of Copenhagen and The University of Iceland. 
  • Take part in international conferences, courses and meetings.
  • Complete the universities joint PhD study Programme - some travelling including to international conferences, courses, and meetings should be expected.
  • Teach at both universities - typically bachelor or master courses. 
  • Undertake independent research (making of PhD thesis) under the supervision of researchers from both universities.

The universities will not provide the students with accommodation.

Application procedure
 
To apply, click on the "apply online" on our website and you are right on the application form you have to fill in. Be prepared and have the below-mentioned documents ready to upload before you submit:

  • A description of the scientific reasons in favour of accepting the particular research proposal as a Joint Research Project. (2-3 pages) and why it should be accepted. 
  • A problem oriented approach of the research proposal its basic research questions and methodological approach (5-10 pages (max)). 
  • Time table for the PhD work (2-3 pages). 
  • Curriculum Vitae (1-2 pages). 
  • Diploma of official qualifying degree and marking transcripts (translated into English) 
  • References from two individuals (only those that can describe legal and research abilities).


All interested lawyers are encouraged to apply. Non Danish or Icelandic applicants must be able to present and document qualifications equivalent to a Danish or Icelandic Master Degree. Applicants supported by external finances must be able to show documentation for such support.

Terms of employment 
Candidates will receive the normal salary according to the rules of the university employing them at any given moment.

Employment during the stay in Denmark will take place according to the agreement between The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance concerning the salary of PhD Students. Furthermore, there will be a personal pension bonus corresponding to the difference between the seniority increment received as a principal according to the new wage system for academics on a group contract basis and the pay of a PhD student. Normally, the scholarship cannot be extended.

Employment during the stay in Iceland will take place according to the Agreement between the Union of University Teachers and the Ministry of Finance (Félag háskólakennara).

The University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Law, is one of eight faculties at the University of Copenhagen. The Faculty carries out research, education and knowledge dissemination within the area of law. The research is partly organised in research centres and groups. The Faculty employs about 75 full time researchers and app. 43 PhD scholars as well as app. 70 administrative staff members. The University of Iceland, Faculty of Law, is one of six faculties in the Department of Social Sciences at the University. It carries out research and teaching in Icelandic law and many areas of European and international law. About 20 full time faculty members carry out research and teaching as well as administrative functions, aided by support staff. Furthermore numerous part time instructors assist in teaching the approximately 750 students now pursuing BA and Masters Degrees at the faculty.
