Australia : PhD positions in Nanotechnology

The School of Engineering Systems at the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) offers PhD positions in Nanotechnology. Research in this area is focused on the synthesis and the analysis of nanomaterials, for application in next-generation photovoltaics and gas sensing. To this purpose, Prof Motta’s group carries on experimental research on inorganic and organic semiconductors. A great deal of effort is pursued to the fundamental investigation of carbon nanotubes and graphene (either pristine or functionalized) by the recently acquired Ultra-High-Vacuum Scanning Tunneling Microscope (UHV-STM). Please visit http://www.bee.qut.edu.au/research/projects/nanotechnology/solar_powered_nanosensors.jsp for contact information and email addresses.

3 PhD positions are currently available:

1) Development and investigation of carbon-based nanomaterials for conductometric gas sensors. Carbon nanotubes and graphene will be created by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or similar techniques, and the final gas sensors will exploit the extraordinary properties (e.g. monodimensional structure, high conductivity, low-noise characteristic) these materials offer. The aim is at improving the sensitivity and the selectivity of such carbon nanostructures towards specific greenhouse gases. The studies will be mainly performed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy (STM/STS) and X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS).

2) Synthesis and investigation of nanomaterials for next-generation photovoltaics. Carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers and/or metal-oxide nanowires, will be synthesized and tailored for the advancement of the power conversion efficiency of novel solar cells. The atomic arrangement of the materials and their local spectroscopic features will be analyzed through STM at various temperatures.

3) Creation of new gas sensors based on metal oxide nanowires. The research will be focused on the growth of nanowires to be applied as electrodes for electrical breakdown sensor devices. The student will delve into the synthesis mechanism of sharp and regular nanowires, and will follow the manufacturing and testing of as-created gas sensors.

The scholarship will cover all the course fees and provides the student with a reasonable annual salary:
International Postgraduate Research Scholarship – Deadline: 30 September 2011! Tuition Fee and up to $40,005 per annum as living allowance for international applicants.

‘Out of Round’ Scholarship (2011) – Ongoing. Free Tuition Fee and up to $40,005 per annum as living allowance.
BEE Living Allowance Scholarship – Ongoing. Free Tuition and Up to $20,000 per annum as living allowance for international applicants.

Admission to the program is based on a competitive selection procedure. Applicants require a degree in physics, material science, engineering or a related degree (Honours, Masters by coursework, Diploma). Research experience and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals are an advantage. Applicants should initially pre-apply with curriculum vitae, summary of past research and – if possible – 2 referees’ reports to Dr Andrea Capasso as soon as possible but no later than October 10th. The final deadline for application to the Australian Government is October 31st. Please note that English proficiency has to be documented with an IELTS (minimum of 6.5 overall, and no less than 6 in each skill) or TOEFL.

With a staff community of more than 200 academic and 160 professional staff, the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering is the key to QUT's strategy to be a leader in the development of courses and research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). QUT has recently begun work on a new AU$200 million Science and Technology Precinct to bring together teaching and research in STEM in a world-leading model.
