Ph.D. Position in Remote Sensing / Albedo Time Series

Ph.D. Position (remote sensing / albedo time series)
The Remote Sensing Research Group, Institute of Geography, University of Bern – Switzerland offers a Ph.D. position in remote sensing. The project “*Albedo time series of the European Alps based on NOAA AVHRR data (1985 – 2012)” *is**funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Within the project the AMBRALS code (Algorithms for Modeling Bidirectional Reflectance Anisotropies of the Land Surface)developed for NOAA-AVHRR and MODIS will be made available by Prof. C. Schaaf, Boston University. Our own receiving stations, an existing pre-processing chain and an extended data archive are the basis of future applications related to albedo. Our NOAA-AVHRR data archive dates back to 1985.

Position: Derivation of albedo for the European Alps
·Apply the AMBRALS code for mountainous terrain
·Validation and improvement of the code
·Processing and analysis of a 25-year time series based on AVHRR data
·Maintenance of ground based Sun photometer, panorama camera and FD-12
Applicants should have an M.S. degree in a relevant discipline, preferable in physical geography or meteorology with advanced knowledge in physics / remote sensing. Skills in optical remote sensing and experience in digital image processing as well as programming (e.g. IDL) are desirable. Project duration is 3 years. The salary is approximately SFr. 40.000,– per year. More information on the group’s activities can be found at http://www.geography.unibe.ch/content/forschungsgruppen/fernerkundung/index_eng.htmlFor additional information please contact: Stefan Wunderle (stefan.wunderle@giub.unibe.ch). The project will be supervised by Stefan Wunderle and Reto Stoeckli (Federal Institute of Meteorology and Climatology, Switzerland). Submit your application to Dr. Stefan Wunderle, Institute of Geography, University of Bern, Switzerland via email – only single pdfs containing all relevant information are accepted.
Application deadline: 10.November 2011; Start of the project: as soon as possible
