Research Positions at Nonlinear Control and Bio-Signal Bioprosessing Lab, Kyungpook National University, Korea


Kyungpook National University (KNU) (경북대학교), abbreviated as Kyungdae(경대), is a leading national university in Daegu, South Korea. The university is one of 10 Flagship Korean National Universities. It is one of the three best recognized and oldest national universities with Seoul National University and Pusan National University. The university was established in September 1946, succeeding the former Daegu Teacher’sCollege, Daegu Agricultural College, and Daegu Medical College. In 2008, it merged with Sangju National University.

Scholarships are available for  Doctoral (Ph.D) and Masters degree programs for highly motivated students. Our research focus lies in the following domains:

Scholarships are available for research programs in electrical/electronic engineering leading to PhD (3.5~ 4 years), Masters + Ph.D (4.5 years combined course) andMaster’s Degree (2 years). The programs are research based and require publishing of research results in top academic journals. Selected candidates will be involved in government funded research projects. Candidates will receive full tuition fee waiverand salary(Approx. 900~1000 $/month for PhD study; 600$/month for Master’s Program). Kyungpook National University (KNU) is one of the leading national universities in Korea and ranked 2nd in terms of research productivity.  Applications for the above programs close by 1st Nov-2011 for March 2012 intake. Students are also encouraged to apply after the deadline and their applications will be considered for the subsequent intake.
Research Areas: Our research group primarily focuses on research areas related to bio-signal processing, biomedical systems, nonlinear control and estimation. The research group will closely work with healthcare professionals and researchers, both locally and globally.
Current research topics/projects include
(i) Developing smart biomedical systems/instruments: – Tremor cancellation technology development for smart surgical tools/devices etc.
(ii) EEG based clinical assessment tools: – Neuro-signal processing, ADHD treatment monitoring, Rehabilitation assessment for stroke patients etc.
(iii) Brain-computer interface :- Assistive devices for rehabilitation
(iv) Nonlinear control and estimation: – Fault estimation in electric vehicles, sliding mode control, sensor-less estimation for industrial drives etc.
Eligibility: Bachelor’s and Master’s degree holding candidates with strong academic background from electrical/ electronic/ communications engineering (EEE, ECE, and EI) are encouraged to apply. Related work experience will be advantageous. University requires scores from one of the English proficiency tests (IELTS – 6; TOEFL (IBT) – 85).

Students from any country who wish to study in the fields of science or technology are eligible to apply. One hundred people will be selected for graduate or doctoral-degree study in the fields of science and technology. This program is open to anyone who has finished a bachelors degree in a relevant field and plans to study in Korea for a two-year masters and a three-year doctoral degree.
* Scholarship covers 2 years for masters degree program, or 3 years for doctoral degree program in the field of science & technology
* Awarded: Masters 8,400,000 won (700,000 won a month), Doctorate 10,800,000 won (900,000 won a month)

PhD and Master Degree Scholarships:
(Korean Government Scholarship Program – Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development )
The Ministry of Education offers a scholarship program for international students from countries that have concluded a bilateral cultural agreement regardless of the field of study. Every year, 100 applicants enrolled in masters or doctoral programs, Korean language programs, or research projects are selected to receive full tuition and living expenses. The application period is open for three months every year from the end of November to mid February.
* Scholarship covers: 2 years for masters degree program, 3 years for doctoral degree program, 6 months to 1 year for research, 6 months to 1 year for Korean language training.
* Awarded: Tuition, monthly stipend (800,000 won / 9,600,000 won a year), research support ( 420,000 a month – 480,000 won a month), health insurance

Post-Doctoral Fellowships:
(International Scholar Exchange Fellowship from the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (Post-DOC))
The Foundation provides scholarships to university faculty members and institutional researchers from Asian countries doing research in the fields of humanities and social sciences, energy related fields, and information science and technology. Approximately 50 fellows per year are supported for research per one-year period in Korea.
* Scholarship covers: 1 year of research in the field of humanities and social sciences, energy, and information and telecommunications
* Awarded: Research grant of 2,200,000 won a month, immigration support, round-trip airfare and insurance.
* Application Period: Deadline by February 15
