The Department of International Business Communication (IBC) at CBS invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of communication management.
Description of the position
The professionalization of communication practice is an ongoing process. Today communication professionals have attained executive positions and engage in managerial aspects of communication that go beyond the operational and technical functions that originally characterized the profession. This process has led to an institutionalization of communication management.
There is a general agreement in the field of communication management that better professional training and education is – and has been – the key to higher professional standards. Under the headline of public relations much research in the field has been conducted in the US and UK. These studies have contributed to the institutionalization of the field, e.g. by harmonization of educational programs and professional certifications.
The progression of the professionalization process, however, is not uniform. In some countries, such as Denmark, communication management studies (public relations, corporate communication etc.) have been introduced rather recently at university level and the educational programs are still much fragmented with dissimilar curricula. As a result, in some countries communication professionals share very disparate educational backgrounds resulting in huge gaps between theory and practice.
The Department encourages PhD proposals for projects that employ a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches to studying one or several aspects of the challenges to pertinent to the professionalization of communication management:
· The interplay between theory and practice in communication management
· The attitude to and use of communication theory among communication professionals
· Theoretical centers of attention in the field and how they are related to practical problems as perceived by communication professionals
· The impact of educational programs on communication practice and the integration of input from practice in these programs
· The role played by key stakeholders such as professional associations, trade association and educational institutions in the professionalization process
The Department of International Business Communication is a new department at CBS whose fields of interest include the role of language(-s) in interlingual and intercultural communication, the role of language and culture competences in organizations, the role of language and culture in communication technology and social technologies, as well as the teaching of language skills. The Department is dedicated to interdisciplinary and problem-oriented research.
The department is divided into 10 research groups. The successful applicant will be associated with the Communication Management Research Group.
The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades from their universities.
The CBS PhD programme
The PhD student will be enrolled at the PhD School in Language, Law, Informatics, Operations Management, Accounting and Culture – LIMAC.
The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows you to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.
General information
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours). The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 24.394 (app. 3,253 euro) up to DKK 29.725 (app. 3,963 euro) depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totalling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.
The salary level and appointment is determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.
To be considered, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process). The applicant must have successfully completed the Masters degree before commencing PhD at CBS. The applicants must be fluent in English.
The application (see link below) must include a 5 page project description. This research proposal should contain a presentation of an original research question, a description of the initial theoretical framework and methodology, a presentation of the suggested empirical material as well as a work-plan.
In addition to the research proposal, the application must include copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis). Applicants must enclose documentation for English language skills if not mother tongue.
A committee of experts in the field in question will assess the applications. The assessment of the applicants will be based on the quality and relevance of the project, including an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to accomplish it.
