2 PhD Scholarships in Nutrition and Population Health

Two PhD Scholarships in Nutrition and Population Health available now!
Two PhD Scholarships in nutrition and population health are available in Deakin University’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN).    C-PAN is a multi-disciplinary research centre recognised internationally for its expertise in nutrition and physical activity.

The Scholarships, to the value of $22,860pa, are with Dr Sarah McNaughton, an ARC Future Fellow.
Project 1: Dietary behaviours among older adults
Physical inactivity and poor diet are major public health concerns and significant determinants of quality of life among the ageing population. This PhD will utilise data collected as part of a cohort study of 4000 adults aged 55-65 years.
Possible research areas include:
  • Examining dietary patterns among older adults
  • Tracking changes in diet over time
  • Associations between diet and quality of life and cardiovascular risk
  • Influences on nutrition behaviours among older adults.
Project 2: Dietary patterns and cardiovascular disease risk in young children
Little is known about how dietary patterns track across early childhood and how these factors relate to cardiovascular risk factors. This PhD will utilise data from the Melbourne Infant Feeding, Activity and Nutrition Trial which collected dietary intake and health data on infants and young children.
Possible research areas include:
  • Describing dietary patterns and tracking of dietary patterns over early life
  • Investigating associations between dietary patterns over early life and cardiovascular disease risk factors.
Entry Requirements
  • Applicants must hold a Bachelors degree with Honours or a Masters degree with a substantial research component, or equivalent, in nutrition, dietetics, or health sciences.
  • Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents.
  • Fluency in English (evidence of English proficiency is required), highly motivated, and able to work in a multidisciplinary team.
