Australia : Two PhD scholarships in theoretical physics

Two PhD scholarships in theoretical physics at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia available to fill (one of which is targeted for an Australian national). The scholarships cover the national/international fees, an annual stipend of $30,000, and some relocation support.   In Australia a PhD is normally 3-4 years in duration and there is no coursework.  The research will focus on the interface between many-body physics and quantum information including:

• topologically order and dynamics of anyons
• connections between quantum simulations and classical statistical models
• many body resources for quantum information processing (ground code models, symmetry protected topological order, etc.)
• implementations of quantum simulations in atomic/optical/solid state systems

The position is part of the Australian Research Council funded Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems.  The research will include travel opportunities to collaborate with the other project nodes in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, as well as our international partners in Europe and North America.

Commonwealth Scholarships 2013 Program for Developing Countries

Commonwealth Scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries are offered for Master’s, PhD, and split-site (PhD) study in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Each year, the CSC invites each nominating agency/university/university body to forward a specific number of nominations. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set their own closing date, which will be before the CSC’s deadline for nominations (21 December 2012).

Numbers of Award:

Approximately 300 scholarships are awarded each year. The CSC invites around three times more nominations than scholarships available – therefore, nominated candidates are not guaranteed to get a scholarship. There are no quotas for scholarships for any individual country. Candidates nominated by national nominating agencies are in competition with those nominated by universities/university bodies, and the same standards will be applied to applications made through either channel.

What it covers:

• Student concessionary or other approved airfare to the United Kingdom and return on expiry of the Scholarship (the cost of jour – neys made before final award confirmation will not normally be reimbursed, nor can fares be paid for a Scholar’s dependants)

Sweden : Doctoral studentship in physical chemistry

A PhD position is available within the NanoS3 network of the "Marie Curie Actions - Initial Training Networks" program of EU, comprising research studies in one of Europe's leading research environment in surface and colloid chemistry. The research project of the candidate involves theoretical modeling and Monte Carlo/dynamical simulation studies of complex solutions containing polymers, particles, and/or other solutes in bulk solution and at interfaces. In particular, we are interested in responsive systems. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with corresponding experimental activities within the "NanoS3" network.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.Special eligibility requirements comprise knowledge from first-cycle studies or the equivalent, but can also refer to special professional experience. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply.To be eligible for the US$15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.

Netherlands : Postdoc in Tectonics and Palaeomagnetism

Paratethys was a large epicontinental sea, stretching from Germany to China at the beginning of the Oligocene (~34 Myr ago), that progressively retreated by a complex combination of basin infill, glacio-eustatic sea-level lowering and tectonic uplift to its present-day remnants: Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Aral Lake. The influence of Paratethys on global change is still a great unknown, mainly through lack of relevant studies in this terra incognita, although model studies suggest a major effect of sea retreat on climate and environment.

Project title: Oroclinal bending and palaeolatitude reconstructions in the Eurasian-Arabian collision zone

The postdoctoral fellow will reconstruct Tethyan plate kinematics and continent-continent collision in the Alpine-Himalayan chain, with emphasis on the southern extent of the Paratethys region. This research will involve determining the paleolatitude position of the Africa-Arabia-derived continental (micro)plates and their tectonic rotations through time, in the context of basin development and the history of oceanic gateways, which is being studied in complementary projects. Accompanying projects in the same research group also involve the India-Asia collision to the East.

The tectonic framework for Paratethys development will specifically be studied in two regions that are characterised by their arc-shape: the Lesser Caucasus and the Talysh-Alborz fold-and-thrust belts. Paleomagnetism will provide the rotation patterns in the arc-shaped regions that possibly resulted from oroclinal bending. Exact dating of formation of these arcuate belts will provide constraints for their formation mechanisms such as the collision of intervening continental fragments (e.g. the South Armenian Block and/or Arabia) with Eurasia, slab roll-back mechanisms or a combination of these possibilities.

To accurately date the sampled sedimentary and volcanic rocks, we will use absolute and relative dating techniques (40Ar/39Ar, biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy). We also aim at geochemically characterising the volcanic exposures in terms of their origin (e.g. volcanic arc versus back-arc). For high-precision paleolatitude results we will process a large number of data, enabled by the use of the robotized magnetometer in Utrecht, with the aim to correct the data for inclination (and hence paleolatitude) error.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a PhD degree in geology or geophysics. We require experience in structural geology and (large scale) tectonic and geodynamic processes. Experience in palaeomagnetism is a distinct advantage.

He/she should communicate easily in English, both verbally and in writing, evidenced by a track record. Candidates should be able to work independently but are part of a team. The postdoctoral fellow must be able and willing to help in supervision of BSc-MSc-PhD students in a number of Paratethys related projects.

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time postdoc position for 3 years.
Employment conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is dependent on experience and will start between € 2.744 and € 3.755 euro per month.

About the organisation
Utrecht University’s Faculty of Geosciences offers education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere. One DC-SQUID magnetometer with ‘in-line’ ARM and IRM facilities is fitted out with a fully automated robot system. The general research theme includes taxonomy and evolution of plant-parasitic nematodes. The candidate will work in a dynamic international research environment.

2013 University of Waikato Academic Merit School Leaver Scholarship, New Zealand

Eligibility:

-Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.

-Have achieved University Entrance .

-Have achieved the NCEA Level 3 Certificate with a Merit endorsement, or equivalent 3 , through a New Zealand school .

2013 BNET Commonwealth Fellowship, Nigeria

-suitably qualified academics with an established record in their chosen discipline

-from any ACU member university

-citizens of any Commonwealth country (except Nigeria)

There is no age restriction for applicants.

Any subject areas in which the University of Ibadan is engaged are eligible for the fellowship – further information on the academic interests of the university is available on the University of Ibadan website.

The selected Fellow will conduct an agreed work programme in conjunction with a named department at the university – applicants should have the endorsement of their proposed host department at the time of their application.

Scholarship Description: One Commonwealth Fellowship is available at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, thanks to a specific donation from the Britain-Nigeria Educational Trust to the CSFP endowment fund. The BNET Commonwealth Fellowship will enable the successful candidate to undertake a programme of teaching and research at the University of Ibadan for a period of up to three months.
