Newcastle University is delighted to announce 70 new Newcastle University International Postgraduate Scholarship (NUIPS) awards.
These International Studies are available for international students starting their studies in September 2012, in the 2012-13 academic year.
Each International Studies scholarship will have a value of £1,500 per year, payable towards tuition.

Eligibility For International Studies

You could be eligible to apply for a NUIPS award if:

you have been offered an area on any postgraduate taught degree programme
you have been assessed as international/overseas for fees functions
you hold a primary category honours degree and IELTS 7.0. candidates holding an higher second (2:1) equivalent degree and IELTS 7.0 are going to be thought of on a competitive basis by the cut-off date for International Studies applications. candidates who don't hold a primary category or higher second honours degree at the time of their scholarship application are going to be thought of for NUIPS awards conditional upon their final degree grade.

The aim of this program is to provide excellent education and an adequate income to PhD students of the Faculty. The STARS program wants to attract the best students from the Czech Republic as well as from abroad.

Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, is a top-quality centre of research in natural sciences. We are proud of our rich history and the number of famous scientists who have worked here (including the Nobel prize laureates Einstein and Heyrovsky). The Faculty takes care about its future as well, however, and that’s why the STARS program was born. Come to Prague and become the future of our Faculty!
Can I apply?
The STARS program is open to all applicants who hold a master‘s degree or equivalent in sciences, medicine, pharmacology and a related field of study. It is also open to students who are in the last year of their studies and will be able to present their degree diploma at the beginning of their PhD.
The candidate should be proficient in English; however, no formal English exam (such as TOEFL) is required.
How can I apply?
This year, we offer 30 PhD projects. You can choose up to three projects for which you can then apply through an online application form.
How are candidates selected?
The program is competitive. The supervisors of the individual PhD projects will shortlist eligible applicants, who will then be invited for an interview to be held during the month of March. The exact interview dates will be agreed upon between the supervisors and the candidates. Based on the interviews, the applicants to whom the scholarship will be offered will be selected in the beginning of April.
What do we offer?
All PhD students receive a state-guaranteed scholarship of 6050 Czech crowns per month in their first year of study; the scholarship increases slightly over the course of 4 years for which it is granted.
In addition to the state scholarship, the STARS program students will also be granted the STARS-scholarship of at least 10 000 CZK per month. Their net income will therofore be at least 16 050 CZK per month (~650 Euro). The remuneration may be further augmented by the project supervisor.
The PhD students accepted for the STARS program will work on the selected scientific project under the guidance of the supervisor. Besides, they will be offered cutting-edge methodological courses and soft skills training (e.g. academic writing, presentation skills). The STARS students may also participate in teaching bachelor and master students of the Faculty.
What else?
All Charles University students (including STARS students) are eligible for subsidized accommodation in university dormitories and meals in university cafeterias.

CEET are currently offereing Top-Up Scholarships for graduate research students undertaking research within CEET.
CEET Top-Up Scholarships are available for graduate research students who receive or will receive an eligible primary scholarship* for study in 2012 and who undertake a research project within CEET. Graduate students who enrolled prior to 2012 are eligible to apply, however the Top-Up Scholarships will not apply retrospectively and will only be funded for the remainder of the duration of the eligible primary scholarship.

CEET Top-Up Scholarships are at a level of $5,000 p.a. renewable for the duration of the primary scholarship, and subject to an annual review of research progress.
Successful applicants will focus on research into energy-efficient telecommunications that are part of the CEET research program

Description of research group and project

The Högberg research group is a small research group interested in building molecular tools out of DNA and in developing new ways of building self-assembled nanoscale object using DNA and other bio-molecules. Further, we would like to explore the use of these kinds of devices for therapeutic and/or diagnostic applications and cell signaling studies.
In general, our work involves the use of computer aided design and programming to calculate DNA sequences to be ordered or produced, followed by microbiology lab work to produce DNA and to fold the DNA into desired structures. Electron microscopy is used to study the structures once formed.

For this project the student will create protein-DNA nanostructures to be used to study cell signaling in-vitro.

Duties and responsibilities
We are looking for a chemist who is interested in working with DNA nanostructure production and protein-DNA conjugation. The PhD studies include 4 years full time work. This includes courses, seminars, conferences and scientific work. Furthermore, the project will give the student a possibility to develop an international collaborative network for future research. Eligibility/Qualifications
The applicant must fulfil the criteria for eligibility for PhD education at Karolinska Institutet (see below). Good skills in collaboration are important to maintain a network of researchers within the PhD-project. Excellent abilities in English, both oral and written, are required. Documented analytic skills and knowledge in the areas of: DNA nanotechnology, organic chemistry, DNA-protein conjugation are also requirements.

Sasol Bursary Scheme is a talent based scheme, as a result, only applicants who meet the minimum criteria will be invited to a selection interview. It is a comprehensive package that covers both financial as well as developmental support throughout the study period. All applications are done electronically, not only to speed up the selection process but also to ensure fairness and electronic tracking of applications received within a particular period. Consequently, we give preference to those candidates with an exceptional academic record who also participate in extra curricular activities. Master Scholarship From RCA-KAIST, Korea, 2012

1. Overview
The RCA-KAIST Master’s Degree Programme of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is designed to educate and train high-caliber students from the RCA Member States with the aim to preserve and enhance nuclear technology for RCA Member States. The graduates of the programme have been contributing to the developments of nuclear and radiation technology for the graduates’ countries by working in government supported R&D institutions, or government funded enterprises, universities etc. as elite leaders.
This programme has been implemented since March 2003 and 25 students in total from 11 countries have been accepted up to now. To finish the course it takes up to 2 years regularly and students must satisfy certain requirements.

2. RCA Scholarship
Scholarships value/inclusions::
-    Application fee (50,000 Korean Won)
-    2 years Tuition (Approx. 8,000,000 Korean Won per academic year)
-    Stipend (900,000 Korean Won/month): to be paid monthly on 25th of each month for up to two years.
-    The economy-class one-way airfare from the nearest airport of the originating country to Incheon, Korea.
NOTE:
-     The local transportation from the air port to Daejeon, and the returning air fare after finishing the course is not covered by the programme.
-     On-campus housing (dormitory) can be arranged but the cost must be borne individually. At present, a shared room by 2 persons at KAIST costs about 600,000 Korean Won/semester (may change slightly) and must be paid at the beginning of each semester.
-     KAIST does not provide family housing for married students during the first year. It can be provided in the second year, but there is a high competition. So students who want to bring his/her family must bear that the rental apartment near KAIST is quite expensive.
-     The meals in the Campus cafeteria cost around 4,000 Korean Won per meal.
-     Medical insurance fee of approximately 40,000 Korean Won/month also to be borne individually.

The position is available from March, 2012, for an initial duration of three years (with a possible extension). The successful candidate will contribute to the chair's research and teaching responsibilities. 6) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is insured by Ministry of Education of China for the scholarship students in China against diseases and accidents. The institution is entitled to ask for compensation on the payment receipts from the insurance company for the expenses generated from hospitalizing for serious diseases or from accidental injury according to the stipulated insurance articles.
7) A one-off inter-city travel ticket (each for coming-in and leaving China)
Scholarship students are supposed to choose the nearest port to their admitting institutions for inter-city travel and a hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket for overnight trip) will be provided to freshmen transferring from the port of entry to the city where the admitting institution is located and students finishing study in China transferring from the city where the institution is located to the nearest port for departure. Expenses for food during the trip and excess of baggage should be self-afforded.
International travel expenses shall be self-afforded.

Sponsored by China's Ministry of Education (MOE), the Government Scholarship Program provides full and partial scholarships to international students and scholars to study in China. Since 2010, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia (Italy) has offered a two-year MSc program in "Informatica - Computer Science" (www.unive.it/msc-computer-science) taught in English, which is suitable for students with diverse academic backgrounds. The program unfolds into three semesters of full-time lectures and labs. During the last semester students work on an individual project and dissertation.

The program covers the theory and practice of a wide spectrum of fields in Computer Science and Information Technology, and allows students to pursue a minor in Statistics.
Three suggested sub-programs, resulting from selecting a specific group of elective courses, are the following: (1) Information Sciences and Intelligent Systems sub-program, (2) Software Dependability and IT Security sub-program, and (3) Information Systems and Statistical Analysis.

FHI 360′s Global Health Research Fellowship provides highly motivated master’s-level graduates with an opportunity to work with world-renowned researchers in global health. Research topics include reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases. The program offers fellows practical experience in research operations and an opportunity to expand their research skills by making important contributions to specific research studies.

Fellowship Objectives
During the full time, two-year fellowship, fellows will have the opportunity to:

Learn about clinical and behavioral research studies;
Participate in FHI 360 research activities; and
Play a role in developing international capacity in public health research.

Program Summary
FHI’s Global Health Research Fellowship accepts up to two applicants each year to participate in a two-year, post-graduate program located at FHI 360′s headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. Each fellow will be mentored by a cadre of experienced FHI 360 scientists. The fellows will have an opportunity to work with multidisciplinary research teams from a variety of departments.
During the program, fellows are able to participate in several phases of a new or ongoing clinical/behavioral study, including study monitoring; protocol development; data management; and IRB submission and review processes. Fellows will also have the opportunity to learn about and participate in research activities in areas such as clinical science; behavioral and social sciences; health service delivery; operations research; monitoring and evaluation; and more.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply to the Global Health Research Fellowship, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

A master’s graduate degree with a strong understanding of global health research, obtained within 12 months prior to beginning the fellowship in July;
Hold a record of high academic standing;
Eligible to work in the U.S. and travel internationally;
Able to make a two-year commitment to FHI 360 Headquarters in Durham, NC, USA;
Able to work 40 hours/week.

The International Summer School (ISS) Scholarship 2012

The International Summer School (ISS) offers intensive Master’s and Bachelor’s courses over six weeks. We welcome more than 550 students from nearly 100 countries from late June to early August.

Scholarship applicants

Many applicants will find that they are academically qualified to attend ISS, but they will not meet the requirements set by the scholarship donors. Many scholarship applicants are academically qualified to attend the ISS, but they do not meet the requirements for a scholarship. As a result, the application will be rejected.

To be a successful scholarship candidate you will need to demonstrate:

that your academic background is related to the course you wish to take;

(MoneyWatch) Tokyo is the world's most expensive city, a dubious distinction the capital of Japan has held for most of the last 20 years, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's annual survey.

In what may be something of a relief to Americans, no U.S. city ranked among the world's 10 most expensive places to live. On the other hand, it's probably not a surprise that no U.S. city made the list of the globe's cheapest places, either.

Despite the human and economic cost of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the yen has strengthened significantly over the last two years, pushing Tokyo back to the top of the rankings, the survey says.

After Tokyo, half of the world's 10 most expensive cities are some of the usual culprits located in Europe, such as Oslo and Paris. However, in what must pain plenty of Australians, red-hot economic growth and a strong currency are rapidly pushing up costs in the land down under. Sydney and Melbourne jumped into the top 10 most expensive cities -- from 32 and 38, respectively -- in just two years.

KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. In biotechnology, the journey from scientific discoveries and technological development to commercial success is fraught with difficulties. At the heart of these difficulties is an inherent tension between academic and commercial demands (West, 2008). These tensions arise, amongst others, from the differences in time horizon between academic and industry research and the fact that academia encourages knowledge dissemination, whereas the commercial sector seeks ownership and tight control of intellectual property rights (Ambos et al., 2008). One of the objectives of this PhD is to understand how R&D in biotech can be effectively commercialized, by specifically focusing on one type of university-industry linkages (Wright et al., 2008), namely spin-offs.

Previous spin-off research has often taken either an individual level perspective (studying for instance researchers joining spin-off teams) or an institutional perspective (studying for instance how tech transfer officers or university policies can affect spin-off creation). This research takes a specific technology level-perspective and studies technology development and commercialization in relation with the (financial and commercial) environment. More specifically, we want to shed light on how spin-offs in green biotech/white biotech/environmental biotech and thermochemical conversion may differ in their (optimal) commercialization and financing strategies. At the level of commercialization, we will study how technology should be co-developed together with industrial parties, and what the optimal commercialization route is for each type of technology.

Whereas the optimal commercialization strategy will affect the financing strategy, this will reversely affect the commercialization strategy. Even though venture capital has been at the heart of Europe’s growth in biotechnology over the past years (Howell et al., 2003), academics have recently raised criticism on the suitability of the venture capital model for the development of a sustainable biotech industry (Pisano, 2006). More specifically, venture capitalists would have investment horizons that are too short for biotech companies, provide too little funds and are ultimately not interested in seed investments. Therefore, at the level of financing, this PhD research will provide understanding of how different types and sources of financing can be combined to provide an optimal financial resource base for the development of the spin-offs. Next to venture capital, the role and interdependency of public sources of funding, foundations, large corporates, and stock markets will be explored, just as the interplay between commercialization and financing strategies.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Centre for Pain by undertaking a PhD in user design or assisted living. We will fund a full-time 3 year PhD studentship in either of the following areas:
a) Inclusive design in dementia. Innovating and improving methods of inclusive design for people with dementia and their carers. How do we ensure that we can design independent living solutions for people with dementia by finding ways to fully include them in our problem definition and solution generation. Or
b) Safe and Mobile. We are producing a number of SMART technology solutions to help people stay independent in the home. This PhD can focus on enabling people with early dementia to be safe outside the home (using communication and sensor devices) or to support carers in being mobile while their loved one is safe in their home.

The start date of the studentship will be Monday 9 January 2012; however a different start date may be negotiated for the right candidate.

Background:

The Centre for Pain, led by Professor Chris Eccleston: http://www.bath. ac.uk/health/ pain/, Bath Institute for Mechanical Engineering (BIME) is actively involved in researching appropriate technology to enhance the social inclusion of people with dementia. The Centre for Pain have developed mobile platforms and intelligent software that can provide support for customised rehabilitation and self management, including monitoring and activities for daily living. With further work this could be incorporated in smart home technology to provide an additional, tailored care for the person with dementia and provide peace of mind for their families. We would like to continue this work which brings greater autonomy to all concerned and is line with Department of Health plans to extend the uptake of assisted living to allow people to continue living independently in their own homes and communities.

Role Description:Within the broad area of research outlined, the details of the research work programme will be designed together with the successful candidate. Duties will include:
Successfully completing a PhD thesis
Contributing to the Department for Health research activities including research presentations and publications
Being an active member of the postgraduate student group and wider department

The PhD candidate has to derive statistical and mechanistic relationships describing the phenology of trees grasses and shrubs in savanna areas of northern Africa. This work involves the generation of a conceptual model in the computing language Matlab in which the (assumed) relationships from the literature or other models have to be implemented relating the phenology to the soil water content, and the climatic conditions. This model needs furthermore to be parameterized and validated with ground data from a number of flux sites as well as remotely sensed NDVI data. The parameterized and validated model needs to be implemented into the LPJ-GUESS model, and a number of simulation runs on Linux based computing clusters have to be performed and evaluated.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Master in Physics or Physical Geography and Ecosystem analysis with specialization on Biogeochemical cycles or climate change. Substantial knowledge required also in the fields of hydrology, ecology and soil science.
The following qualities are regarded as important for the selection of a candidate:
* Programming experience, particularly in Matlab.
* Experience in modeling of climate driven dynamical systems, their development, parameterization and validation.
* Experience in digital remote sensing.
* Experience in Geographical information systems.
* Experience in Linux computing (required for simulations on high performance cluster)
The applicants are expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in natural sciences. A degree in subjects like Geology, Geochemistry, Geography or Aquatic Ecology is preferable. Documented experience in fieldstudies is an advantage.

Project Background
When seeking to re-design business processes – a perennial top priority of chief information executives – organisations use graphical documentations of their business processes, so called process models. These models act as blueprints of organizational processes, and are a key tool for making re-design decisions, i.e., decisions about where, how and why changes to the processes should be enacted to warrant increased revenues, business growth, improved operational efficiency, cost reductions or increased compliance.

A process model that documents a business process in an incomplete, incorrect, cumbersome to decipher, or otherwise deficient manner will not convey the information about the business domain to the decision maker such that a good decision can be facilitated. Any re-design of the processes, in consequence, will then fail to deliver the expected benefits. When creating process models, therefore, business analysts require principles that guide them in conceiving graphical representations of business processes that are useful, intuitive and accurate to the
decision-makers (process owners, process managers, business analysts, systems designers and the like) working with these models.
This project aims to develop a theory, and theory-driven guidelines, for developing
understandable process models. Specifically, it will deliver:
• A fundamental theory about factors and consequences of process modelling for
decision-making tasks; and
• on the basis of the new and validated theory, practical guidelines based on
rigorous empirical insights to guide the creation of useful, intuitive and accurate
process models for decision-making.
Project Governance
The research project is led by Associate Professor Jan Recker, PhD. Jan is Alexander-
von-Humboldt Fellow and Associate Professor for Information Systems at
Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, where he is co-leader of
the Business Process Management research group. His main areas of research include
business process design in organizational practice, user acceptance and IT-enabled
business transformations. His research is published in the MIS Quarterly, the Journal
of the Association for Information Systems, the European Journal of Information
Systems, Information & Management, the Scandinavian Journal of Information
Systems, Information Systems, and other key journals.

The International Doctoral Program in Energy Science at Kyoto University

The international Doctoral Program in Energy Science is offered to provide
foreign students and researchers, who have a Master’s degree (or
equivalent), an opportunity to further their studies toward a Doctoral
degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, Japanese proficiency
is not required since students can obtain the necessary credits by choosing
ones among a variety of subjects presented in English and their research
works are also supervised in English. An evaluation of eligibility for
admission will be made on the basis of the documents submitted to our
Student Affairs Section, Administration Office.

<*Five students* will be admitted with a scholarship from the Japanese
Government.>

SCHOLARSHIP

- Allowance: *153,000 to 156,000yen* per month for at most 36 months
(subject to change depending upon the annual budget of each year)
- Travel to and from Japan: Economy-class *round trip airfare*
- School fees: Exemption from the entrance and tuition fees

ELIGIBILITY

- Nationality: Any of the countries with which Japan has official
diplomatic relations
- Age:* under 35 years* of age as of April 1, 2012
- Academic qualifications: *Master’s degree* or equivalent (by the end
of September, 2012)
- Language ability: Good command of English (Japanese is not required)

PhD: Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,400 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Radiation, Radionuclides and Reactors is situated in the Reactor Institute Delft (RID). The department's common focus is nuclear radiation and reactions. Although its areas of interest are varied, including materials, sensors and instrumentation, energy, sustainable production and health, all research is related to radiation in some way. In experimental research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the Reactor Institute Delft as well as of large, international research facilities.

The Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy section performs research on functional and structural materials, aimed at practical applications. The focus is on the study of the relationships between structure, dynamics and function at the atomic and nanoscale. For this we use neutrons, positrons, X-rays, NMR, muons, Mössbauer spectroscopy and first principles modelling.

Job description

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is an important alternate catalytic technology in petroleum refining, used to produce a broad distribution of clean liquid fuels and chemicals from syngas. The cobalt catalysts used are quite costly, so a long catalyst lifetime is required to ensure that the process is economically feasible. Although the catalyst deactivation mechanisms have been studied to some extent, to date there is no consistent picture. In-situ characterisation of the catalysts is regarded to be one of the most important routes to developing new, better industrial catalysts. In this project, Mössbauer spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography will be applied in a systematic way to unravel the structure of the catalysts on an atomic scale under real industrial conditions. The project involves the handling of radioactive materials.
The research will be carried out in the group of Prof. Ekkes Brück at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Delft University of Technology.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated chemist (MSc or an equivalent degree) with a solid background in inorganic/organometallic chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. An additional requirement is hands-on experience with catalyst synthesis and in-situ characterisation techniques (FTIR and/or XAFS spectroscopy). Experience in operating and maintaining gas chromatography systems is a plus. The candidate must have the ability to work independently, write reports and effectively communicate results, and must also have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. The candidate should be fluent in both spoken and written English.

PhD in Image Analysis

The Department of Imaging Science and Technology (IST) is a physics department which specialises in imaging physics and image-based measurement science. Our mission is performing cutting-edge research in imaging science to advance the fundamental understanding of physical phenomena, leading to new, innovative imaging principles and revolutionary imaging instruments. We offer a stimulating academic climate for collaborative research and for educating students in the modern aspects of engineering physics and imaging sciences.
From optical images of colliding galaxies taken by the Hubble telescope to acoustic images of geological structures in the subsurface, from magnetic resonance images of the human brain to optical and electron nanoscopy data for studying biomolecules, the acquisition, processing and analysis of images presents intellectual, scientific and technical challenges. We tackle the development of new image acquisition and processing systems and the quantitative analysis of the 2D, 3D and 4D images obtained through such systems.

Job description

We are looking for a PhD student to develop automatic image processing techniques to measure descriptive features of Crohn’s disease activity in both MR and microscopy (histopathology) images.
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) constitute one of the largest healthcare problems in the western world, affecting over 1 million European citizens alone, 700,000 of whom suffer from Crohn’s disease.
Grading of Crohn’s disease severity is important to determine treatment strategy and to quantify the response to treatment. Colonoscopy is considered the reference standard for diagnosis of all IBDs. However, the procedure is invasive and is considered very burdensome by most patients.
The PhD project is part of the VIGOR++ project, which aims at developing new instruments for the quantification of the severity of Crohn’s disease. These tools can support early diagnosis, improved therapy planning and a better quality of life for patients.
VIGOR++ is funded by the European Union and involves leading European groups in abdominal radiology, medical image analysis, modelling, scientific visualisation, gastroenterology and commercial diffusion.
The PhD student will collaborate closely with other PhD students involved in the VIGOR++ project.

Requirements

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate with an MSc degree in (applied) physics or a related subject. He/she must have an excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and a top 20% ranking during his/her BSc and MSc. Experience in image processing is helpful. Good programming skills in MATLAB and C are a necessity.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of four years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of €2612 gross per month in the fourth year.
